Facial Thread Vein Removal using Electrolysis

Facial Thread Veins can be a problem for both men and women.

Although there are negative connotations associated with Facial Thread Veins and the links to alcohol this is not always the case as there are other governing factors which can be the cause of facial thread veins on the face, namely, sunbathing, smoking, exercise, allergies, expose the weather, life style, hormones, hot baths and steam, extreme temperature changes, hot spicy foods, the list goes on. When we get hot to help the body from over heating the the tiny blood capillaries open up to allow the heat to escape from the skin, this is known as vasodilation and when the body cools down they close, this is called vasoconstriction. This is how the body balances and regulates its temperature. Over the course of time due to age and the thinning skin including the loss of collagen within the skin’s structure, these tiny vessels gradually break down and allow blood to by pass giving a flushed appearance.

  • +LEG THREAD VEIN TREATMENT AND HOW THE TREATMENT WORKS

Sclerotherapy is used for blue, purple leg thread veins. An established and highly successful treatment which is extremely effective using a well respected medical technique that has been used in the treatment of thread veins since 1930 and long before that for larger veins.

A solution is injected into the offending vessel, which then irritates the vein. The walls of the vein stick together, emptying the blood, and the veins gradually disappear. The procedure is painless and all skin types respond equally well. Sclerotherapy is a treatment which is carried out by a trained clinician, using a fine needle which passes small amounts of solution into the veins.

  • +What is sclerotherapy?

It is an established safe, effective and well respected medical technique that has been used for the treatment of thread veins since the 1930’s and long before that for larger veins. A solution called a sclerosant is injected into the offending vessels. (To scleroses means to “dissolve” and “shrink”). This solution acts as a vein irritant and once injected immediately causes damage to the little vessels. The body’s own natural-healing mechanisms will simply “break-down” these injured vessels over a period of several weeks.

How will I know if I am suitable for treatment?

We ask all our clients to attend for an initial consultation, which takes approximately half and hour. During this time your legs will be examined for suitability and a medical questionnaire completed. Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment so all our questionnaires have to be passed to one of our resident doctors and your medical history is discussed for approval. We do NOT require your own Doctor to give his approval.

    How much will it cost?

The cost of the medical consultation is £50 this lasts for 6 months and usually all necessary treatment can be performed within this time. How many syringes of sclerosant needed during each sessions depends on how many veins need treatment . As a conservative guide an average of two – nine syringes may be used in one session. (This is discussed during the medical consultation). The cost of two syringes is £130. It may be possible that the veins may need further treatment, this also depends on type of thread veins, how many, location, severity of veins etc.

    Does it hurt?

Not much as the needles we use are extremely fine and are inserted relatively superficially in the skin. Most clients only feel a slight prickling as the injections are given – the solution we inject actually acts as an anaesthetic.

How many sessions will I need?

We can usually provide you with a fairly accurate estimate at the consultation. Most clients are pleasantly surprised that a fair amount can be treated in each session.

Quite often an area of substantial thread veins will need to be treated more than once – the treatment provides a gradual “fading” of the vessels so it cannot be guaranteed that they will disappear in just the one session.

How soon can I have the treatment?

As soon as we receive a medical clearance, which generally only takes a few days at the most?

Will all my thread veins go?

This depends on the amount, severity, size and location of the thread veins. It is probably unlikely that they will all completely disappear but most clients experience a significant fading of the worst ones! But clients can have a further treatment in order to reduce the visible signs to an absolute minimum. On average most clients report a 75% improvement and in many cases a significant percentage higher. Some clients are very “resistant” to the solution we use which means they require more treatment than others.

    Could they become worse?

Unlikely but possible – in our experience almost all of our clients enjoy a significant improvement with sclerotherapy.

However, it is important to understand that any medical procedure will have its risks and side effects and possible complications – although we do all we can to ensure these are minimal – you should have an understanding of them:

pigmentation – staining in the skin caused by the pigment contained within the blood left as the vessel walls are healing just under the skin’s surface – this may surround an injection site looking like a dark freckle or run the length of the vessel as it heals leaving small brown lines. Generally speaking pigmentation does fade over a period of time. However, how long depends on each individual client’s healing ability and in certain ‘prone’ clients this can be permanent, although rare.

telangiectatic matting – very fine small blushes of capillaries left in the wake of larger thread veins having been treated or as a side effect in certain “prone” clients – i.e. those in the younger age group particularly if on the contraceptive pill.

skin necrosis – a shallow ulcer that can occur at the site of an injection. This is unusual and always heals but in rare cases may leave discolouration in the skin where treatment has been performed. (Regular gentle exercise to promote the dispersal of the solution helps to prevent necrois)

allergic reaction – anaphylactic shocks – these are very unlikely and the solution we use has NO documented cases.

who is suitable for sclerotherapy – this depends on the medical profile of each client but generally speaking clients in their late 20’s upwards can expect pleasing results.

How will my legs look immediately after treatment? – The initial response is inflammation and localised swelling. Over the next few days this reaction will subside. The treated vessels will then turn darker and some may ever turn black. A bruising will be noticed and then a gradual fading of the vessels.

When will my legs look better? – They will probably look worse for a week or two! Everyone is different with their healing capabilities but anticipate a period of between 4 – 6 weeks approximately. In some cases it may even take much longer.

Is it safe? – Sclerotherapy is a safe treatment once a client’s medical profile has been established and the list of possible complications established. Just to reassure potential clients our Sclerotherapist Susan Lennie I.F.H.B. B.A.B.T.A.C. I.T.E.C.H., has several years experience in this field of work. Sterile needles are used and all procedures are totally hygienic.

When should I have it done? – When it is convenient to keep your legs covered for approximately 4 – 6 weeks. It is best to book to have your treatment(s) in good time before a holiday or special occasion. The winter months are ideal as treatment is more comfortable and winter clothing is very camouflaging!!!

  • +Some DO’s and DON’T’s before treatment:

DON’T “heat” yourself on the day of treatment – this includes the avoidance of hot baths, showers, steam and saunas, sunbathing and sunbeds etc. we cannot treat a sunburnt skin!
DON’T apply any cosmetic products to the legs prior to treatment – i.e. fake tan, perfumed lotions.
DON’T consume alcohol or take aspirin 24 hours before treatment (consult with you GP if he has prescribed aspirin for you).
DO complete any depilatory treatment at least 48 hours before treatment – i.e. leg waxing, shaving etc. It is easier to see the thread veins on hair-free legs!
DO buy some ARNICA tablets and ARNICA cream (this is a homeopathic remedy for bruising – we find that clients that take the tablets before and after the treatment and who use the cream get better results!). We would suggest to begin the tablets within a week or two of the first treatment and to continue to take them until the bruising has gone and the area fully healed.
DO go to your local chemist and get fitted by the pharmacist with either one of the following: stockings/tights/tubi grip (surgical stockings if you have them following varicose vein surgery can also be used) for leg support (these maybe prescription, it is important that are of the correct size, he will know what ones are best for you).
DO wear loose and comfortable trousers or a long skirt when you come for treatment

  • +Some DO’s and DON’T’s after treatment:

DO keep the support stockings/tights/tubi grip, surgical stockings on for one month – the compression helps in the success of the treatment – it is usual to hold the stockings/tubigrip up by using a suspender belt. (Only to remove them for showing and bedtime)
DO take the arnica tablets (dosage as recommended on the packet) until the bruising has gone and the vessels have faded.
DO rub the arnica cream in several times every day – gently for the first few days and then use a little more pressure – the massaging will also help in the healing process.
Do walk after the treatment – ideally 10 minutes every hour – this maintains a healthy blood flow vital in successful healing. Light exercise is recommended – while the area is healing over the next few weeks try to exercise regularly but DON’T engage in heavy exercise, or swim for 24 hours after treatment. Physical exercise should be kept to a minimum for one month, to allow for the healing process to take effect, and sometimes longer in some cases.
DON’T sit or stand for a prolonged period for at least one month after the treatment and it is advised when sitting to raise your ankles higher than the normal sitting position i.e. rest them on a stool.
DON’T drink alcohol or take aspirin for 24 hours following treatment.
DON’T apply any products to your legs for 24 hours after treatment i.e. perfumed lotions.
DON’T use fake tans until the inflammation has gone – this may take several weeks i.e. for some clients.
DON’T sunbathe or use a sunbed until the inflammation has gone.
DON’T have a hot bath the day of the treatment – ideally shower (obviously remove the supports and apply them again afterwards!).
DON’T sauna or use a steam room until the inflammation has gone.
DON’T have any depilatory treatments on your legs, i.e. waxing, creams etc. until the inflammation has subsided.
DON’T wear compressive garments for a few days after treatment i.e. hold-up stockings or tight jeans.
DON’T have any beauty treatments until the inflammation has subsided, which may vary in clients – i.e. avoid leg waxing, massage, body wraps etc.
